The photo above is the important cultural property “Southeast Sumi Yagura”.
At the four corners of Nijo Castle’s outer moat, there were corner turrets, which were used as ‘lookouts’ and ‘arsenals’.
However, in 1788, the Great Fire of Tenmei burned down the northeast and northwest corner turrets, leaving only the southeast corner turret and the southwest corner turret.
Nijo Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603 as the guardian of the Kyoto Imperial Palace by the Tokugawa shogunate and the residence of the shogun when he went to Kyoto.
In 1867, the 15th shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, is known to have performed ”Taisei Hokan'” in the Great Hall of the Ninomaru Palace in Nijo Castle.
There are many nationally designated important cultural properties in the castle, and Nijo Castle, together with 17 temples, shrines, and castles such as Kinkakuji, Ginkakuji, and Kiyomizudera, was registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site 688 on December 17, 1994 as a “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities)”.

That is this “Nijo-jo Castle”.

But speaking of Nijo-jo Castle,

The castle of the Ashikaga shogun three generations is also named “Nijo-jo Castle”,

The castle built by Oda Nobunaga for Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the 15th shogun of Ashikaga was also “Nijo-jo Castle”,

Toyotomi Hideyoshi also had “Nijo-jo Castle” in Kyoto.

Castles called “Nijo-jo” was built many times, and the remaining Nijo-jo Castle is the last Nijo-jo Castle built by the Tokugawa family.

The ruins of the castle tower, which is said to have a six-storied, and was moved from Fushimi Castle.

In 1750, it was destroyed by a lightning strike.

The inner moat can be seen below here.

…However, this castle tower’s plot of ground is quite narrow.

…Is it possible to built a six-story building in this space….
